Royal Opera House

Royal Opera House, Stanton Williams, London

Main entrance staircase for the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden London leading from the foyer of the main entrance up to the first floor and Paul Hamlyn Hall Champagne Bar. Designed to create a sense of drama and theatre the staircase has lighting behind opal glass in the risers and Portland stone treads. Rap around chrome steel sheeting under the stairs and up its side along with a shadow gap under the first tread gives the stairs an illusion of floating and being much thinner seen side on than they are. Glass balustrades with a brushed bronze hand rail have been used to give the feeling of opulence and a touch of reality.
